Oscar’s One Month Ampuversary

Wow.  Today is Oscar’s one month ampuversary.  I’m not sure that time has flown; I think two weeks ago I had told someone it had been a month.  Though time has seemingly crawled, his ability to adapt has been  nothing short of amazing.  His incision has healed well and his fur is coming back. If you’re not up close to him, what you notice most is the flash of the white from his chest that indicates something is missing from his left side.  He’s also doing well getting around. I think he’s faster than the four legged cats! Now that his left side is all healed, we do see him trying and trying to use the leg that’s no longer there. I think sometimes it frustrates him because he looks like he thinks if he tries hard enough that foot will be there. That part breaks my heart for him because he just doesn’t know…  His “good” shoulder also appears to get sore from so much (and different) use.  He’s gained some weight from being less active so we’re working hard to manage his food so he doesn’t get heavy and put more strain on that shoulder.  He does appreciate a good massage to help out the tired muscles!

The weather has been largely uncooperative – at least from the human’s perspective – so going outside with Oscar has been a challenge.  He dearly loves to go outside!  When we get a warm day, we usually go to the hay shed to see if we can locate any critters (mice) to chase in the hay shed.  The limited time outside seems to only frustrate him occasionally.  He’s learned to play with (and tear apart) toys and enjoys his naps in the warm cozy house since it’s so cold outside.  He even jumps up on to our bed and sprawls out as if he’s always done it 🙂  and still enjoys those good upside down naps with his humans while they watch the television at night.  I imagine as the weather gets warmer, the idea of being inside will become less appealing to him and that will present new challenges.  For now, Oscar is doing well!

Oscar Update

Oscar’s been taking short, supervised trips outside.  The supervised part is much to his dismay; it’s really hard to hunt for mice when the human and that noisy dog follow you everywhere!  He loves being outside and gets around really well.  He can really get up and scoot when he decides to run!

A couple days ago we explored the area behind the garage and the edge of the pasture behind that.  However, we think (or the human thinks) we’ve found a good spot – the hay barn!  Oscar can go in and climb up and down and sit and wait for any sign of things to hunt.  His human can sit quitely with him, which keeps the human happy, and that noisy dog can sit a ways away so as not to scare off anything he might find.  He likes to sit on the top bales and watch, ever so carefully to see if anything is moving.  I think he could spend hours…

In other news, he’s adapted quite well to being inside and being spoiled rotten 😉  He is, I think, still doing some recuperating as he seems to get tired pretty quickly, but overall he’s doing well.  His kitty siblings, Wally and Boo, seem to have adjusted okay to him being inside more, although they still bat at him, he’s starting to get the hang of sitting on those back feet and swatting back but more often than not he just ignores them and goes on.  He just seems to be a happy little guy.  For that we are so very thankful!

Sundays with Oscar

With a hint of a bright future, Sunday morning dawned a little chilly but glorious and full of sunshine. Oscar thought it would be a good day to go OUTSIDE (spoken in his voice) and since I needed to vacuum, my husband obliged him 🙂

My husband, the dog, and Oscar made quite the team. They tromped all around our yard, over to the horse pasture, and back to the hay barn. Since all that walking around is tougher when you have three legs, a short respite in the sun was in order. My husband said Oscar was so happy to be outside and just purring away. He did try to make a break to catch mice in the hay barn but was quickly scooped up.

Once back inside, he promptly curled up in his bed and slept for the rest of the afternoon! He is doing so well and is generally a pretty happy kitty. He’s also learned that like the other two cats, he can sleep on his humans’ bed sometimes. What a nice soft place to curl up and it’s a little bit cool in the room, just the way he likes. He also got to watch a movie with his humans so he could spend some time sleeping upside down which is his favorite way to sleep when it’s warm and he feels safest.  Awww…20150130_215850
All in all a good day for Oscar!

Also, today (Monday), he went to the veterinarian to have his stitches taken out and all went well.  On to getting the incision all healed up.
